Summary
- Determine holder height first before dropdown lights are measured, record light levels, how long they’ve been ‘on’, and measure vertical (i.e., leaf tip) distance from ground level.
- Most (2’ or 4’) plants that fit these shelves are in spots with no LED sign or light, so an even, steady, high wattage (i.e., 12v or 24v) light gives best growth. 4’×2’ width bulbs help distribute light evenly and reduce shelf wear.
Purpose of this Report
Identify solutions to improve conditions for growing plants; provide alternative methods for measuring and identifying optimum growing conditions; identify potential technology to enhance overall plant growth and yield. This report serves to communicate how indoor grow light technology can be used to develop viable indoor growing options, and documents appropriate measurement methods and assessment of current technological resources.
Each grower will be responsible for selecting their best method by measuring plant growth, fixture types/wattages, and using hanging/surface-mounted fixtures. Goal: develop most effective techniques for adequate and consistent light for leafed plants. (extension.missouri.edu)
Recommended single shelf targets work across different plants.
Recommended Light Targets by Plant
| Plant | Good Shelf Target (foot-candles at upper leaves) | Approx. Lux | What you will see at that intensity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pothos | 250-700 fc | 2700 – 7500 | Closer and/or compact node spacing, much stronger variegation, more new leaves than low light |
| Philodendron (common vining type) |
250-800 fc | 2700 – 8600 | Larger sized leaves, smaller petioles vs. low light |
| Monstera deliciosa | 500-1000 fc (Shelf center) |
5400 – 10800 | Faster growth, bigger leaves, more fenestrations than those grown in low light |
MU Extension’s “medium light” is a good shelf target. Pothos and philodendrons can thrive at the lower range and may be placed toward the outer edges, while Monstera prefers the brightest zone (shelf center). (extension.missouri.edu)
If you prefer Illinois Extension’s categories: low ≈ 75 fc, medium ≈ 150 fc, high/bright ≈ 300 fc, direct ≈ 1,500 fc. Most shelf grow-lights provide “high” or higher light at 36–48 inches from both plant and source; multiple sources reduce heat and improve uniformity.
Fixture & Bulb Options
The following (fixture/bulb) items are widely available for single shelf gardening and meet or exceed minimum specs.
Option A (Recommended): LED Bars for Uniform Light Cover
| Required Specification | Purchase Specification | Why Important |
|---|---|---|
| Form | Integrated LED bars, plug-in bulbs (not battery/USB) | Spread light edge-to-edge, reduce hotspots and leggy corners |
| Color / Spectrum | Neutral to daylight white: 4,000–5,000 K (or “200% full spectrum”) | Plants use many wavelengths for foliage growth |
| Power | 20–25 W (2’ bar), 35–50 W (4’ bar) | Achieves medium light at 8–12 inch mounting height |
| Optics | Wide beam (≈120°) or diffused cover | Reduces “spotlight” scorch risk |
| Safety | UL or ETL listed w/grounded plug | Decreases fire hazard, esp. on metal/wood shelf |
| Mounting | Supplied w/chains/clips or underside-mountable | Height adjustability is crucial |
Option B (Works, More Work): E26 Bulbs in Reflectors / Clamp Lights
| Required Specification | Purchase Specification | Extra Comments |
|---|---|---|
| Bulb Type | PAR38 or BR30 LED grow/daylight (E26) | Reflectors give better downward focus than A19s |
| Power | 15–20 watts per bulb | Will require several bulbs |
| Color/Spectrum | 4,000–5,000 K white or full spectrum | Avoid purple (“blurple”) bulbs in visible living spaces |
| Beam angle | 40–60° for reflector 90° for wide spread |
Narrow beams = intense hotspots (raise fixture if needed) |
| Bulbs Needed | 2 bulbs (up to 30" shelf), 3 bulbs (36–48" shelf) | Evenly space bulbs with lit areas connecting |
Hanging Height: Starting & Adjusting
- Mount LED Light Bar so the lit area spans the whole shelf.
- Start with fixture 10” above the highest leaves (ending up 6–12” over pot). MU Extension recommends 6–12”.
- Using reflectors: start at 14–18” above leaves, then lower gradually to improve coverage or reduce dim spots.
- After 48–72 hours, measure light at highest leaves and compare: lower if too dim, raise or dim if too bright or bleachy.
Timer Schedule Guidance
Setting the timer right is key. Illinois Extension recommends 14–16 hours for these aroids (pothos, monstera, philodendron), with at least several hours dark for plant rest. Adjust lamp height as plants grow so leaves stay in the target range.
| Timer | How Does It Work? | How Often Will I Use? |
|---|---|---|
| 13 Hours | On for 13 hrs (ex: 8am–9pm), 11 hrs off | When plants have low natural light (baseline) |
| 14–16 Hours | On for 14–16 hrs (ex: 7am–9pm); off at night | If plants are stretching but maxed out on fixture height or in winter/short days |
– Verify setup at the leaf surface (not with the eye – use a light meter in foot-candles or lux, per MU Extension).
– A PPFD (PAR) meter is best; if not available, use a lux meter/app with diffuser for rough estimates.
– Conversion factors (lux to PPFD) vary by light source; white LEDs ≈ 0.013–0.018.
(Apogee Instruments)
How to Measure & Verify Your Setup
- Take first readings at top leaf level. Avoid measuring only shelf surface.
- Take 5–9 readings across shelf (center, corners, midpoints)
- Adjust layout to deliver: Pothos/Philodendron – 2,700–8,600 lux; Monstera zone – up to 10,800 lux.
- If center is much brighter than corners, add bars, raise fixture, or run longer to even out.
- To dim a hotspot: raise light, add a diffuser, or reduce fixture brightness.
Daily Light Integral (DLI) Quick Reference
| Average PPFD at leaf height | Hours/Day | Estimated Daily DLI |
|---|---|---|
| 80 µmol/m²/s | 13 | ≈ 3.7 mol/m²/day |
| 120 µmol/m²/s | 13 | ≈ 5.6 mol/m²/day |
| 160 µmol/m²/s | 13 | ≈ 7.5 mol/m²/day |
| 200 µmol/m²/s | 13 | ≈ 9.4 mol/m²/day |
One Shelf Placement Strategy
- Monstera: brightest zone (center, under lamp/bar)
- Philodendron: middle zone, not too dark or too bright
- Pothos: shelf edges/corners, let vines trail
- Turn pothos pots weekly for even growth
Typical Shortfalls (and Remedies)
| Observation | Likely issue | Resolution |
|---|---|---|
| Elongated internodes, reduced foliage, plants leaning toward room | Low light level and/or source too far | Lower fixture (6–12” zone), add second luminaire, increase daily light hours |
| New leaves show excessive white/crisp patterns below fixture | Hot spot (too much intensity) | Raise fixture 2–6”, use diffuser lens, spread output via bars |
| Monstera with slow holes/fenestrations, low–medium light or immaturity | Needs brighter or centered shelf spot | Center Monstera in main shelf zone |
| Pothos turning all green (losing variegation) | Insufficient light | Move nearer center or increase lumen output (don’t water more) |
| Peripheral plants stretch; central plants normal | Poor light uniformity (narrow beam) | Add another luminaire or use wide optics; check corners with meter |

Acclimatizing Plants Under Lights
- Days 1–3: 8-9 hrs/day at same height
- Days 4–7: 11-12 hrs/day
- After 1 week: up to 13hr/day (if leaves look normal)
- Whenever greatly lowering lights, repeat short acclimatizing (2–3 days)
